More children have disabilities due to congenital CMV (cytomegalovirus) than other well-known infections and syndromes, including Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Spina Bifida, and Pediatric HIV/AIDS. Stop CMV at National Congenital CMV Awareness DayStop CMV Founder and President, Janelle Greenlee, spoke at the 1st National Congenital CMV Awareness Day at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia on June 29, 2010. Her speech, "The Awareness Answer", addresses how congenital CMV awareness will increase market demand, facilitate funding, and lead to the development and implementation of a CMV vaccine.
Stop CMV successfully wrapped our first "Hands to Stop CMV" Awareness Campaign during June's National Congenital CMV Awareness Month. We received 535 hand photo submissions, easily surpassing our goal of 500! Stop CMV also logged over 10,000 public votes during the campaign--amazing! With over 200,000 web impressions during the month of June, we are hopeful that this campaign has been instrumental in raising awareness of congenital CMV around the world!
