Lucia's Story
"We, Nayari and Oscar Ruben, had a beautiful girl on December 23rd who will be a year old with congenital cytomegalovirus..."
It all started when I was 2 months pregnant, my transaminases are too high, but not given importance, assimilated with the typical vomiting of pregnancy. Shortly after chipboard was not right, because her bowel was hyperechogenic. This was weekly ultrasounds, and the intestine was the same, even told us that the spleen and liver were slightly swollen, rest of calcifications in her head.
I was 4 months pregnant and then we asked for a serology TORCH, the results told us the worst, had gotten the CMV for the first time during pregnancy. But what is CMV? After explaining all the pros and cons did not announce the worst, even recommended abortion. After explaining that no, we wanted to continue to develop an antibiotic to stop the virus while pregnant. Immediately accepted, if only they told us that was in evidence, but we accept also called immunoglobulin antiCMV. After this treatment, did an amniocentesis to check whether the virus was in the placenta. Again the bad news came, the virus was swimming in the liquid where my daughter was growing up...
Since it was expected, probably because they told us that early delivery or forward them to treat it at birth with valganciclovir. Since we had prepared the antibiotic, caused the birth was 36 +6 weeks pregnant, December 23, 2010, Lucia was born. Just born and took me in an incubator ... had to treat for 6 weeks with valganciclovir morning and night, and after 6 months of oral treatment at home and weekly reviews ...
Few months have been very complicated, uncertain. Our little girl had delayed motor, the neurologist would not know how they could be pregnant affected small cysts on her head. The ears were not good at all, from 50dB loss in left ear and from 70dB in law. The worst and the last thing we expected was what your eye. The ophthalmologist told us that his darling had a coloboma of the retina, the eye endidura not finished form, but it was a congenital CMV are unrelated, which we doubt.
It's been a year and a half of fighting, most doctors and what is their strength compensates us his joy. The early care physicians are helping us A.P.A.N.I.D., speech therapist and physiotherapist are getting better. Her psychomotor and motor system according to their age range today, so we are very happy.
At 8 months old and has headphones with them since this great talk much, in fact without them also hears us and responds. His darling still until it is older can not tell us what you will or not, but for now we say that eye will not see, although we, in dealing day to day we see and perceive that something is, if we covered our good eye, take the toys, so little seen.
I think we were very lucky, maybe the anti inmoglubina CMV while pregnant put me brake a lot, and also valganciclovir. Today we are thrilled to have decided ABORT IF NOT FIGHT, Lucia shows us every day.
Thank you very much for everything you are doing by the CMV in the world, Ana Pastor and all who have guided and helped us a bit more in this great unknown, I bring you our story here.
