Cain's Story
"My name is Stephanie and my son, Cain, was born with congenital CMV..."
My son was born with congenital CMV. His symptoms included enlarged liver and spleen, jaundice, low platelets and some hearing loss. On the plus side, he was born 9 lbs 5 oz and a very normal head size.
He was admitted into a clinical study where he received Valganciclovir by mouth. He participated in this study for approximately 4.5 months. He was supposed to remain in the study longer, however, the doctor had such a difficult time performing blood draws on him that it was very traumatizing on us all. We then stopped the medication.
He still wasn't showing any development issues at 6 months of age. We kept taking him to the audiologist, where he was fitted with hearing aids at 4 months old. He wore them until he was 9 months and then stopped using them. His hearing tests (including ABR) showed his hearing to be within normal limits.
Today, he is 2 years old and still doing great. He still does not wear aids and he is speaking in full sentences. We are extremely blessed and thank God everyday for his health and wellness!
